5 Things for Your Home and Fall To-Do List

Posted by on Sep 27, 2018 in Blog | Comments Off on 5 Things for Your Home and Fall To-Do List

Tips for your Fall To-Do List: You probably give your home a deep clean in the spring, but you should also show it some love at the beginning of fall. Here’s where to start:

fall to-do list

1. Perform a pantry audit.

First, remove all the cans and boxes from the shelves, and vacuum away any lingering dust or crumbs (a lot can build up in a few months!). Then, inspect each item, tossing anything that is expired or past its prime. Consult this shelf-life chart as a helpful guide and part of your fall to-do list.

2. Test smoke detectors and clean vents/ducts.

You already know to put fresh batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors (doing it on the days you change the clocks for Daylight Saving Time is an easy way to remember). If any are more than 10 years old, replace them. But you also need to clean your dryer vents & air ducts, since dust that accumulates can cause them to underperform or start a house fire!

3. Flip your mattress.

When you turn back your clocks, turn your mattress over, too. If you can’t flip it because it has a pillowtop, rotate it 180 degrees to prevent body impressions form causing certain spots to slump. Sprinkle the mattress with baking soda to neutralize odors, and then vacuum it up.

4. Clean your rugs and carpet.

Get a jump on party season by giving your rugs and carpeting a good scrub. We recommend getting a professional cleaning once a year to keep up.

5. Vacuum all upholstered surfaces.

You think your couch is clean until you plop on it, and a haze of dust appears around you. Give sofas and chairs a good vacuuming, making sure to hit both sides of the cushions, the back, sides, arms, and even the platform underneath the cushions. We also recommend getting a professional upholstery cleaning once a year.

Fall Allergies: Simple Tips to Keep Them Out of Our Homes

Posted by on Aug 30, 2018 in Blog | Comments Off on Fall Allergies: Simple Tips to Keep Them Out of Our Homes

fall allergies

Fall brings a kaleidoscope of colors, cooler temperatures and, for many of us, the onset of major allergy season. As the leaves fall and the season brings sometimes very wet weather there area few typical triggers for fall allergies. The biggest offenders are ragweed, mold and dust mites.

Ragweed is a major cause of fall allergies. In most parts of the country, ragweed will continue to release pollen into November. Mold is another major cause of allergy symptoms. Piles of leaves and damp areas outside and inside the home are places where mold can quickly grow. Dust mites, eager to get out of the cooler weather, will migrate into our homes and accumulate in all of our most comfortable places like furniture, beds, rugs, and carpet.

Luckily, with some planning and organization, it can be relatively easy to deal with these triggers and minimize the impact of fall allergy season. Here are several tips to keep you one step ahead:

  1. Clean all vents and air filters in your home prior to turning on heating units.
  2. Keep on a regular schedule of dusting your home and use damp cloths which help contain the dust instead of just spreading it around.
  3. Wash your sheets and bedding on a regular basis…weekly is recommended.
  4. Keep shower curtains clean. The bottom edge of fabric shower curtains is a prime spot for mold to grow.
  5. Vacuum as often as possible and use a HEPA-filter machine if you can.
  6. It’s good practice to have your carpets, rugs, and upholstery cleaned by a professional regularly. For carpets, 2-3 times per year is the recommended schedule. Fall is the perfect time to prepare your home for holiday festivities and remove built-up dirt, bacteria, and other allergens.

Contact Wolverine Carpet Cleaning today at (734) 973-2222 and get this busy fall season off to a clean and healthy start.

Rug Weaving: How Long Does It Take To Weave A Rug?

Posted by on Aug 16, 2018 in Blog | Comments Off on Rug Weaving: How Long Does It Take To Weave A Rug?

Before you begin weaving your own Oriental rug, consider this. Rug weaving is an art. A skilled weaver in India can tie about 6,000 knots per day. Thus the time for one person to knot a 9′ x 12′ rug in several common qualities works out like this:

(Note that usually more than one person works at a time on rugs from about 4′ x 6′ and larger. To get the actual weaving time for a carpet, you’d need to divide the “Time required” shown here by the number of weavers working simultaneously on the rug).

What Pets Bring Into Our Homes and Leave On Our Carpets and Rugs

Posted by on Aug 2, 2018 in Blog | Comments Off on What Pets Bring Into Our Homes and Leave On Our Carpets and Rugs

We all love our pets, but do you know what they bring into your home?

Saliva: A dog has at Least 20 species of bacteria in its mouth. All of these bacteria are left behind when your pet slobbers on your upholstery, rugs and carpets.

Pet waste: There are 20 million fecal coliform bacteria in a single gram of pet waste – urine or feces! These bacteria remain on carpets and rugs even after you clean up the waste.

Pets

Dander: An estimated 30 million Americans are allergic to animals with pet dander being the main cause! Simply vacuuming may not get rid of all of the allergens.

Dirt: Studies show that dirt carries many different forms of bacteria and a square foot of carpet can harbor up to 1 pound of dirt! Our cleaning system will deep clean your carpets and rugs, removing the places bacteria can hide.

The EPA recommends that homes with pets have their rugs and carpets professionally cleaned every 3 to 6 months for the most effective cleaning and removal of pet hair, odors, dander, and dirt or soil.

Most Rug And Carpet Dirt Is Tracked In From Outside

Posted by on Jul 19, 2018 in Blog | Comments Off on Most Rug And Carpet Dirt Is Tracked In From Outside

carpet dirtHere are a few tips to help keep that carpet dirt outside and off your carpet and rugs:

ADD A WELCOME MAT
The larger the mat the better. Something nice and thick in front of the door. If that doesn’t work, you might try a mat that says BUZZ OFF!

TRY A ‘NO SHOES’ POLICY
It can be tough to enforce, but once family members get used to slipping off their shoes at the door, it can make a huge difference with carpet dirt.

USE JUST ONE DOOR
Especially during bad weather or dusty days, you only have one area to keep clean.

No matter what you do, you’ll still need to vacuum regularly. Have your carpet professionally cleaned at least once or twice each year!

Rugs and Carpet Provide a Number of Great Benefits for Homes

Posted by on Jun 21, 2018 in Blog | Comments Off on Rugs and Carpet Provide a Number of Great Benefits for Homes

Adds Beauty and Style

You can choose from many thousands of rugs and carpet styles and colors. That means your ultimate choice will reflect how you want to personalize your living space. Rugs and carpet can be a neutral foundation, or they can be a focal point with vibrant colors and stronger bolder patterns and textures.

“Studies have shown that people with asthma and allergy problems have seen symptoms improve with rugs and carpet.”

Improves Indoor Air Quality

New carpet is the lowest VOC-emitting flooring choice available. Rugs and carpet actually act as passive air filters, trapping dust, pollen and other particles and removing them from the breathing zone. Studies have shown that people with asthma and allergy problems have seen symptoms improve.

Provides Warmth and Comfort

Carpet provides actual thermal resistance, or R-value. In colder climates or seasons, it retains warm air longer, an energy conservation benefit. Rugs and carpet also provide a comfortable place to sit, play or work and they give a room an overall warmer feeling.

Softens Slips and Falls

Rugs and carpet are ideal for cushioning our footsteps, reducing slips and falls and minimizing injuries when falls do occur. They provide safety protection for the whole family, but especially for toddlers and older individuals.

Reduces Noise

Big screen TVs, speaker phones, computers and modern sound systems make our homes noisy places. Rugs and carpets help absorb these sounds. Adding a cushion pad beneath your carpet reduces noise even further. They also work as a sound barrier between floors by helping to block sound transmission to rooms below. And carpet on stairs help mask the sound of constant foot traffic.

Simple Home Cleaning Tips

Posted by on May 31, 2018 in Blog | Comments Off on Simple Home Cleaning Tips

Crumbs on the kitchen counter, dust on the TV, gunk in the bathroom sink — We can’t stand our houses when they are a mess. But the thought of spending an entire day cleaning it from top to bottom sends me running to the sofa for a nap. After all, in a week, it’s just going to get dirty again.

Home Cleaning

Here are three simple home cleaning steps to help curb those nagging feelings:

Set cleaning to auto or leave it to the professionals

Make friends with the latest effort-saving cleaning tools and products, such as robotic vacuum cleaners and floor washers, and self-cleaning cat boxes, which rake cat poop into cartridges that you replace every week or so. An automatic shower cleaner spiffs up your shower at the touch of a button, and self-cleaning toilet bowl cleaners scrub your toilet every time you flush. We also suggest calling in a professional to help with your cleaning needs, like your rugs, carpets, upholstery and tile & grout.

Sweat the small stuff & zap the dirt fast

Clean drips as soon as they occur, before they dry or soak into surfaces or carpet & rugs. When you spill on your range top or carpet, quickly run a damp sponge over the (hot) surface – before it stains. Dust often so it doesn’t have a chance to build up and harden in corners and crevices.

Pick a focus room & clean in short bursts

Spend another 10 minutes cleaning one room. Clean a different room every day, so eventually your whole house gets attention. Look at the top, middle and bottom of the room, and pretend you’re seeing it for the first time. Tackle the tasks you don’t always get to, like removing cobwebs and dusting plants.
